A blocked drain rarely happens without warning. Small signs build up over days or weeks before things get bad. Spot them early, and you can often avoid a flooded kitchen or a call-out at midnight.
Here are the signs worth acting on. We explain what each one usually means, and what to do about it.
Water Draining Slowly
This is the first sign most people notice. Your sink takes longer to empty. Water sits around your feet in the shower for a few seconds too long.
Slow drainage almost always means a partial blockage. Fat, hair, or waste is narrowing the pipe. It will not clear itself. It tends to get worse over the following week or two.
Gurgling Noises From Pipes or Toilets
A gurgle after you flush, or after the sink empties, means air is trapped somewhere in the system. That trapped air is a symptom, not the problem itself. It points to restricted flow further down the pipe.
Hear it more than once? Treat it as an early warning, not a one-off.
Bad Smells From Drains or Plugholes
A drain should not smell. If yours does, something is rotting inside the pipe. Often it is food waste or grease. Sometimes it is general debris that has caught on a rough joint and started to build up.
The smell tends to get stronger as the blockage grows. It is worth checking sooner rather than later.
Rising or Slow-Flushing Toilets
Toilets are usually the first fixture to show a serious problem. Watch for water rising higher than normal. Also watch for water that takes a while to settle after a flush.
Does it happen in more than one toilet in the house? Then the blockage is likely further down the system, not in that one pipe.
Water Coming Back Up
Sometimes water rises back up through a plughole or toilet after you flush or drain something else. If that happens, stop using water in the house straight away. This is a sign of a serious blockage. It can lead to flooding fast.
Do not keep running taps and hope it clears on its own.
Several Drains Blocked at Once
One slow drain is usually a local problem. Several slow or blocked drains at once point to something bigger. Often it is the shared pipework, or the main line running out to the sewer.
This kind of blockage needs proper equipment to find and clear. A plunger will not touch it.
Damp Patches Near Pipework
Damp patches on a wall or floor can mean a leak. This is especially true near where pipes run. Pressure builds up behind a blockage, and it finds the weakest point to escape.
Left alone, this kind of leak causes real damage. Plaster and flooring go first, then the structure underneath. If you spot damp near pipework in Newcastle upon Tyne or Gateshead, do not wait for it to dry out. Get it looked at.
Signs Outside the House Count Too
It is easy to only check indoors. However, outside drains give warnings as well. Look out for:
- Standing water near a manhole cover, even after dry weather
- A patch of grass that stays wet, or greener than the rest of the lawn
- A gully outside the kitchen or bathroom that empties slowly
- A faint sewage smell in the garden or driveway
Any of these can mean the same blockage. You are just seeing it from the other end of the pipe.
Why Older Streets Are More at Risk
Much of Newcastle upon Tyne, Gateshead, and Sunderland has housing built well before modern plastic pipework became standard. Older clay pipes crack more easily. Their joints are often rougher, which gives debris something to catch on.
Mature trees along many streets add another factor. Roots naturally search out moisture. A slightly leaking joint gives them exactly that. Over time, roots work their way in and cause a blockage from the inside.
None of this means an older property will definitely have problems. It just means the early signs above are worth taking seriously a little sooner.
What To Do Next
A slow sink might clear with a plunger or a kettle of hot water. However, if more than one of these signs shows up, it is time to call in help. The same goes for any problem that keeps coming back.
Our engineers use CCTV drain surveys to see exactly what is happening inside your pipes before we touch anything. That way, we find the actual cause, not just the symptom. Once we know what we are dealing with, high-pressure drain jetting clears the blockage and cleans the pipe walls at the same time. That makes the problem far less likely to come straight back.
